Tasks overview
The task model, its states, the actions people can take, and the events that make up a task's timeline.
A task is a unit of work for an agent in one project: a title, a prompt, optional background knowledge, a priority, dependencies, requirements, a policy override, an environment and capabilities.
States
QUEUED → CLAIMING → PREPARING → RUNNING → VERIFYING → COMPLETED
│ │ ▲ │
│ ▼ │ └─► RUNNING (remediation)
│ WAITING_FOR_LIMIT / WAITING_FOR_INPUT
▼ ▼
CRASHED → RECOVERY_REQUIRED / QUEUED (requeue)
any non-terminal → CANCELLED ; failures → FAILEDOnly declared transitions are accepted. Time in WAITING_* states does not count towards hang or execution
limits. COMPLETED, FAILED and CANCELLED are terminal.
Actions
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
pause / resume | Stops the agent and later continues from the checkpoint or session (it does not freeze the process) |
cancel | Ends the task |
retry | Continues from the last checkpoint after RECOVERY_REQUIRED or failure |
restart | Starts fresh |
input | Answers a WAITING_FOR_INPUT question; passed to the next session |
approve / deny | Decides an approval gate (production environment, push, plan) |
From the dashboard, agentctl task cancel|retry|pause|resume <id>, agentctl task input <id> --text "…", or
POST /api/v1/orgs/:orgId/tasks/:id/actions.
Timeline
Every step is an event with a correlation id: claim, preparation, agent output, tool summaries, checkpoints,
verification, Git and recovery. agentctl logs <taskId> [--output] prints it; the dashboard streams it live.
